real vs. "real"
Been a long time since I posted.. honestly, I haven't had many thoughts I felt like posting in a while. but... I have to share this incredible quote...
Hitler wrote in _Mein Kampf_:
"It is true that we are barbarians. That is an honored title to us. I free humanity from the shackles of the soul, from the degrading suffering caused by the false vision called conscience and ethics. The Jews have inflicted two wounds on mankind -circumcision on its body and conscience on its soul. They are Jewish inventions. The war for the domination fo the world is waged only between the two of us, between these two camps alone -- the Germans and the Jews. Everything else is but deception."
I would say, perhaps this is what the Palestinian PR people would like to say and what even liberal Europe agrees with though they try not to agree too loudly.
The social conflict now is not about Jews's not being good members of society in the nations they live in and Israel's right to exist as much as itis about a battle between the "real" people who want to make causes that will turn humanity into barbarians (distracting people in the name of justice, equality, and ethics towarsd ideals that lead them farther and farther from ethics, equality, and fairness) and the real people who remember that love starts at home and goes from one person to another, that changing the world starts with oneself, and that the greatest power in the world is love. In the story of Faustus/Faust/Dr.Faust when Mephistopheles tries to take Faust's soul, he fails because of the force of love. When all those Miss Americas and Miss Universes call for world peace, what they are really looking for is ...how do we help people to learn to respect themselves, and respect others... how do we teach them to love?
A fellow at the Israeli Consulate in the Midwest said to me, the Palestinians are "a people who have fought against Israel by teaching their children hate and lies." When I read the interviews of the mothers of martyered boys talk about how they are proud their sons have died for this cause, I wonder where is the ethics or the conscience? Is there justice in what they have done? They have killed their own children just so they could kill more Jews. Tell me this, those who cry for justice and equality and fairness, would you send your own children to death? I sympathize greatly that Arabs find they are not always treated with respect or equally in Israel. I hope the day will come that they live peaceably with their Jewish neighbors and that we see peace in the land. I would argue though that respect comes to one when that person respects himself or herself. When the Arabs respect themselves and treat themselves as beings with dignity -when they learn then to live with ethics and conscience, meaning that they learn to take responsibility and behave responsibly- they will be accorded respect.
One thing that has always bothered me about feminism is that it doesn't actually treat women with respect! It's as if the most self-hating women, particularly the ones with identity crises, end up being the ones to lead the feminist ranks --and frankly, I don't understand it.
When I read about a young 12 year old British Jewish girl being attacked on a bus in public by a gang of other 14 year olds for being Jewish, I thought about this quote and wondered to myself. No one on that bus helped this young girl. The newstory got lost in the hype about Lebanon and peaec in the Middle East. I asked myself, "where are the journalists who are struggling to tell the truth?" Have we lost our passion for truth in this generation? There is so much obfuscation of what is real... now we make up what is real in reality tv shows that fake the real... so we can feel "real" again. We're living in a time that is trying to make things so "real" that we forget what is real. The "real" news is that the Arabs are bieng put down by the Israelis. The real news is that something which no civiilized society should ever put up with 14 year old girls beating up at 12 year old girl so she has a concussion and fractured ribs in public on a public bus at least half full of people happened and not well-publicized.
As an example of our thirst for the"real" vs. real, I look at the plethora of people thronging to become doctors. Being a doctor in this day suggests a "real" career where one hopes one can touch lives, help lives, change lives, heal lives, and touch something "real" --just the way people grew up watching "ER" and "Grey's Anatomy" feel they are "really" in touch with what medicine is like. It's got the added benefit of good pay, though who knows for how long. It isn't that we have idealistic people thronging to be doctors or the best test takers anymore, but we've got people who are thirsting for a piece of the "real" life.
In a world overloaded with the famous "-isms" feminism, liberalism, conservatism, socialism, communism, ... we are breeding people who no longer know which side of ethics or which side of conscience they stand on. On one hand this generation of people is so angry with the restrictions that being ethical and responsible carry... and on the other hand they are so desperate for the realism and value that having a conscience imbue into living and life. What side will win?
